Anchor Hocking, a global designer, manufacturer and marketer of high quality glass products, hired Laser Reproductions to create a prototype of the Christmas 2006 product line to present to the executives of Wal-Mart. The project involved crafting an elegant, yet modern mixing bowl prototype that incorporated what would typically be a custom designed floral motif. The original floral pattern existed only as a hand-sketched design penned by an artist and needed to appear on the surface of the bowl.
Laser Reproductions suggested a unique blend of digital manufacturing in combination with traditional skilled craftsmanship. The bowl was created through the use of stereolithography (SLA). Anchor Hocking then provided a hand-sketched paper pattern with a top-of-bowl designation. This was attached to the bowl and transferred directly to the surface of the part. The complex rendering is then meticulously engraved by hand into the part using hand as well as power tools. The rough edges of the engravings were then smoothed and parts were clear coated and ceaselessly polished in a multiple step process to provide a waterclear, flawless finish.
Anchor Hocking used the prototypes to preview the new line with Wal-Mart and other retail executives, as well as to feature in photo shoots and as master molds to create future glass mold designs.
