Hilliard, Ohio-based Rahal Letterman Racing, was founded by Bobby Rahal in 1992 and has established itself as a top-tier North American open-wheel team. Prior to the 2006 Indianapolis 500, the team asked Laser Reproductions to produce working prototypes of a wind shield piece that would be mounted on IndyCars above and in front of the driver’s head. With the race a mere 18 days away, the team needed the parts to be produced quickly.
The shield was designed to direct airflow in a specified pattern over and around the driver to reduce drag. The parts needed to be lightweight yet durable to endure the conditions of IndyCar racing. Laser Reproductions compiled the specifications for the parts and produced accurate and durable SLA parts.
Because of the rapid turnaround, the team was able to use the parts in all three of its 2006 Indianapolis 500 entries. Team Rahal Letterman driver Danica Patrick took eighth place at the 2006 Indy 500.
