Challenge

Maytag, a leading global appliance manufacturer contracted with Columbus-based design firm NPI to establish an aggressive product development program that would introduce new and innovative products to market—quickly and cost effectively. New product development strategy focused on products that were more than extensions of existing lines, and were truly unique in concept and application—products that had strong emotional appeal, and would distinguish Maytag as a leading innovator in the appliance industry. Maytag needed fast and reliable external resources, capable of supporting this aggressive and unique product development approach.

Solution

Laser Reproductions provided NPI with rapid prototyping services (stereolithography and cast urethanes), including component sourcing (vacuum forming and hardware), integration and assembly of 12 pre-production prototypes, used for demonstration and production masters that were needed by Asian-based manufacturers.

Result

The SkyBox personal beverage vendor is a unique product—an elegant product solution, with sports-to-beverage marketing associations, developed through a collaborative effort of four partnering companies. Time-to-market was achieved in an intensely short time frame for such a complex assembly—going from concept to reality in 11 months.
