Technically Magic
Project Atlas

Challenge

Technically Magic owner and special effects designer, Chaz Vance, was in need of 200 complex parts ranging from head-to-toe including built-in specific orientations to replicate Atlas’ stance. Creating an almost 4’ tall Atlas figure encompassing over 200 complex parts, the model required precise detail delivered in a very short period of time. Not only was Laser Reproductions required to build all 200 parts needed for one Atlas model, Technically Magic doubled the order without changing its tight delivery expectations. Upon receipt of the parts from Laser, Chaz and his team would sand, prime, paint and then assemble the two life-size Atlas robots.

Solution

Laser Reproductions directed Technically Magic to Stereolithography (SLA), a rapid prototyping process that creates an accurate and durable part with a surface finish and build quality that would make Technically Magic’s processing of the parts easier and faster. From design assistance to proper scaling of the life-size model, to exact orientation and parts consolidation on 18 machines, Laser Reproductions had the resources available to assist Technically Magic in achieving its goals and bringing the model to life.

Result

Laser Reproductions was able to create the SLA prototyped parts within Technically Magic’s specified timeframe. The parts were finished and assembled by Technically Magic’s team of specialists and described by Portal 2 fans as “incredible.” From engineering support to a functional prototype, Laser Reproductions created high-quality parts with extreme detailed precision meeting all necessary parameters defined by Technically Magic.
