Laser Reproductions is proud to announce its newest stereolithography (SLA) resin, RenShape® SL 7820...
Rapid prototyping, manufacturing and product development company, Laser Reproductions, recently cast pig ears in urethane for an Ohio State University Art and Technology Department project.
“Laser Reproductions realistically reproduced the pig ears upon the request of OSU Associate Art &Technology Professor Ken Rinaldo,” said Laser Reproductions Vice President, Bret Border. “The process involves taking two actual pig ears and casting them in urethane. The end-result was a rubber product with spectacular color and translucency, yet durable enough to withstand the exhibition.”
The prototype animal ears are included in an Eindhoven, Holland art exhibition with an underlying social message. The art work, “Our Daily Dread”, focuses on the increased mechanization of food production to keep up with the population’s needs.
The project suspends animal ears from the ceiling within the display. As the viewer approaches the ears, sensors and motors allow the work to move forward. Next, sounds of pigs and cows are heard along with noises of robots, a slaughterhouse, and other machines. The audience also views a video screen showing an image of a dog chewing a cow’s ear.
All components of “Our Daily Dread” are intertwined to demonstrate how robotics and machine technology are supplanting the human hand in food production.
